The sea, theme parks, marine adventures: Virginia is the place to start when you imagine a holiday in the sun. Whether by plane or by car (it takes between nine and twelve hours to get there from Montreal), it is true that it offers a thousand and one possibilities. Here are seven of the many good reasons to go.
- Beaches for all tastes
Virginia Beach boasts a lovely trio of beaches to its many visitors. The famous promenade beach first of all, where the sportsmen go jogging and cycling and where young and old alike have fun through the string of hotels, restaurants, funky museums, playgrounds, souvenir shops and resort beach attractions. Then, the beach of Chesapeake Bay, Wilder, with its marina, its gentle waves and its calmer activities (kayaking, paddling). Sandbridge Beach is a peaceful and relaxing beach in the heart of nature.
- Kayaking with dolphins
Because you can do so much more than just relax on the beach, an unforgettable kayak ride with the Dolphins is a must. Offered in the Chesapeake Bay, The Atlantic Ocean, and near Sandbridge Beach, few-hour sea-kayaking trips lead adventurers to the best places to watch and watch dolphins swim. A magical and moving.
- The wild adventure with Surf & Adventure
Located in Sandbridge, about 20 minutes from Virginia Beach, Surf & Adventure focuses on eco-adventure. There are courses, surfing and canoeing camps, kayaking tours, beach equipment rentals and paddle surfing. The guided or self-guided tours focus in turn on wildlife education (flora and fauna), dolphin watching and the splendour of sunsets on the Natural Park of the backpay National Wildlife Refuge.
- The wine and micro-brewery route by bike
Virginia is home to more than 275 vineyards and more than a hundred artisanal breweries that are waiting to be discovered. By bike, Northern Virginia turns into a road with discoveries to drink. Local produce, landscapes and cycling make up a Virginian trio that is hard to match. Passing through the historic town of Alexandria, a tasting stop is required at the Port City Brewing Co., named “”the best small brewery in the United States”” at the Great American Beer Festival (you should also find out about the original Pedals ‘N’ Pints bike tour.) In Loudoun, a local Trail linking 17 microbreweries was designed. Fairfax is home to the short Lorton Beer Trail. And along the trails of Washington & Old Dominion and Mount Vernon, there is a chain of breweries that it is good to discover on two wheels.
- History and entertainment in Williamsburg
Far away from the Eternal Beach, Williamsburg relies on history and traditions to entertain travelers. This is where the Colonial Williamsburg historic site is located, the country’s largest museum of history where people dressed in period costumes take on the character of inhabitants, merchants, farmers and militiamen straight out of the 18th century. Nearby, the Busch Gardens theme park and the Water Country USA Water Park offer rides and water slides.
